We run two day navigation courses for beginners in the Peak District National Park, Snowdonia and the Shropshire Hills. On these courses, we hope to teach you the ability to follow paths and tracks and arrive safely and independently at your destination, while still enjoying your day on the hill. No previous knowledge required.
Maps including the different types and scales Map orientation with and without a compass 6 figure grid references and how to use them Map reading including symbols and contours Relating the map to the ground Estimate distance on both map and the ground Use timing and pacing to estimate distances Learn to take compass bearings and how to follow them Relocation using simple techniques Linear features, handrails and aiming off Understand access rights of way You will need normal hill walking clothes and kit (see our terms), plus, a Silva 4 Expedition Compass, local 1-25,000 map and a note book and pen.
